SPINNAKERS – SYMMETRICAL and ASYMMETRICAL

LENGTH 
12-hour Two Day course (2 x 6 hr days). Instructor will advise if extra training is required to develop skills to Australian Sailing Standard.

Hoisting∙Can rig sheets, braces, halyards and control lines (tweakers) -Symmetrical
∙Can set up the pole
∙Can rig sheets, tack line, halyards and control lines – Asymmetrical
∙Knows the correct pre hoist procedure for attaching spinnaker
∙Can hoist efficiently in both Symmetrical and Asymmetrical
Trimming∙Understands the importance of correct pole position and height on all relevant points of sail
∙Use of sheet/control lines on all relevant points of sail
Gybing∙Knows the correct procedure for end-for-end gybing – Symmetrical.
∙Knows the correct procedure for Inside and outside gybing – Asymmetrical
Dropping∙Can set up a headsail prior to dropping spinnaker
∙Understands different drop techniques e.g. hatch, windward, leeward
∙Can stow spinnaker gear efficiently after drop
Other Skills and Techniques∙Can helm effectively on all relevant points of sail
∙Understands optimum downwind angles for differing wind speeds / types of spinnaker
∙Can helm whilst gybing
∙Understands the importance of communication, preparation, teamwork and coordination when using spinnakers

SPINNAKERS PRE-REQUISITES

  • Water confident.
  • Over 16 years or 12 years with a participating guardian.
  • Completed Start Crewing and Start Helming  (or equivalent skills)
