CYCSA Launches Youth Sailing Foundation
Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia set to welcome a new wave of sailors
North Haven, SA – The Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia (CYCSA) is thrilled to announce the creation of its Youth Sailing Foundation – a unique opportunity for the South Australian sailing community.
With programs due to commence in the spring of 2021, the CYCSA’s Youth Sailing Foundation will introduce the next generation to the sport of sailing, develop their skills, and foster their progression into sailing champions of the future. Participants will also develop critical life skills such as planning, strategy and resilience – for the benefit of themselves, their team, and the broader community.
The Youth Sailing Foundation has committed to a fleet of six medium size one design training Elliott 7 keelboats. The initiative involves robust junior, general training and corporate elements, enabling the Head Coach and Instructor team to foster continuous development of both participants and the program.
Dominic Rinaldi, President, the CYCSA says: “The introduction of the Youth Sailing Foundation is the culmination of more than a year’s research, deliberation and work by the CYCSA, and represents our commitment to both the future of our sport and the youth of South Australia.”
It is an industry leading program which will secure the future of sailing by making it more accessible to a diverse range of South Australians. It is representative of our mission to provide a pathway to introduce sailing, and its associated life skills, as well as the opportunity to propel our sailors to achieve success personally, nationally through competition, or as a window to future career option in the marine industry. As we proudly take delivery of the Elliott 7 keelboats and commence offering courses, we are both excited and confident about the benefits it will deliver. The Foundation will further cement our Clubs reputation as the States premier Yacht Club.
Our goal is to ensure that Youth Sailing Foundation participants will learn, train and race on a level playing field with boats of similar size and performance as those used across Australia and internationally. The CYCSA will send youth teams to compete at national, and eventually international, levels.
All participants will leave the program and associated experiences as better, more rounded people, equipped with invaluable life-skills and a life-long passion for sailing.
“Initiatives like this help develop the skills of young sailors, as well as preparing them as leaders within the club and their community,” said Australian Sailing CEO Ben Houston.
“The program will also compliment Australian Sailing’s recent investment in to developing strong club-based pathway programs. We look forward to working with clubs such as CYCSA to continue to showcase how sailing as a sport develops exceptional skills for life, such as leadership, teamwork, and decision making.” Houston concluded.
The program has already attracted recognition from industry leaders including Ian Leeson, Regional Manager – SA of Australian Sailing who says: ”It’s exciting to see the CYCSA taking this initiative to provide something truly unique in South Australia, the CYCSA’s program will not only benefit existing youth sailors by providing an accessible pathway into bigger boat racing, which currently doesn’t exist in SA, but it will also open the door to more South Australians of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to become involved with our sport by learning skills through the CYCSA’s Australian Sailing Accredited Marine Academy, and to experience the joys that sailing and the club community can provide in so many ways.”
