CYCSA Racing Association
The Racing Association operates all the racing activities of the Club. The 2011-2012 racing program is comprised of ten series and four regattas. The Summer season will take the form of Saturday and the occasional Sunday Club Championship Racing; as well as Wednesday evening Twilight Racing. The extensive Short-handed Series and Winter Series is conducted during the colder months.
Div 1, Div 2, and J24s compete from the 8
th October 2011 to the 21
st April 2012 for the Club Championship in the Inshore, Coaster and Offshore Series. The Inshore Series consists of a combination of windward/leeward and fixed mark courses over the course of 14 races for Div 1, Div 2 and J24. The Coaster Series consists of 9 coastal (Cat 6) races (conducted during daylight hours), while the Offshore Series is made up of 3 (Cat 3) races over 150nm and 4 (Cat 3) races under 100nm.
Whilst all boats can compete under the Club handicap (PHS), an IRC division (Div1, Div 2) is also offered and J24s may compete as a One Design Class. Boats competing under IRC may nominate for the elite South Australian IRC Championship, a 12-race series which combines Inshore, Offshore and Coaster Racing. This series is open to all boats in the State which hold a current IRC and Cat 3 Certificate. After the success of its inception last season, the 8-race Inshore/Offshore series, combining 4 coaster races and 5 offshore races, is once again being offered.
Twilight racing is extremely popular during the Summer season. The CYCSA offers two Wednesday Twilight Series – one before and one after Christmas. The Twilight Series is a great opportunity for the novice “racer” or more casual sailor to compete amongst the entire fleet. No spinnakers are allowed in this series, thus alleviating the need for experienced crew on board. These races are a great social event, ending with a gourmet BBQ, presentations and prizes, and are a great opportunity to break up the working week and make some new friends.
Highlights of the racing calendar include the Queen of the Gulf Regatta, the Premier’s Cup Regatta, the Commodores Shield Regatta, the Adelaide to Port Lincoln Race (which leads in the Lexus Lincoln Week Regatta, run by the Port Lincoln Yacht Club), the Great Southern Regatta, and the J24 Southern Cross Cup.
